Mount Kailash & Lhasa Overland Journey

A 15-day overland pilgrimage from Lhasa to Kathmandu through Tibet’s sacred monasteries, Yamdrok Lake, Shigatse, Saga, Lake Mansarovar and the full Mount Kailash Kora. This route begins with Tibetan culture, reaches Kailash by road, crosses Dolma La, then returns through Kerung into Nepal.
Trip Notice

Route status (September 2026): this journey exits Tibet through the Rasuwagadhi–Kerung border, which was damaged by the flash flood of 26 August 2026 and is closed for the 2026 season while repairs continue. Our 2027 departures are planned in good faith that the crossing reopens for the next season; border status is verified before every departure. Sightseeing access, Tibet permits, kora support, meals, road movement and overnight stops still depend on current regulations, weather, local rules and group health. Final operating details are confirmed before departure.

Final terms for delays, refunds or rescheduling must be confirmed in writing before deposit.

Pilgrimage Timeline

Fifteen days from Lhasa to Kailash and Kathmandu Detailed Itinerary.

This itinerary begins in Lhasa, crosses western Tibet to Lake Mansarovar and Mount Kailash, completes the kora, then exits through Kerung/Rasuwagadhi to Kathmandu.

Chapter 1 — Lhasa Acclimatization and Sacred Culture
Day 1 Arrival in Lhasa and Acclimatization

The yatra begins in Lhasa, already high enough to remind every pilgrim that Tibet must be approached slowly. Before Kailash appears, the body must first learn the altitude of Tibet’s sacred city.

Upon arrival in Lhasa by flight or train, you are welcomed and transferred to the hotel. The rest of the day is kept for rest and acclimatization. The instructions are simple but important: drink water, avoid alcohol, avoid strenuous activity and let the body adjust.

Lhasa is not a normal arrival city. It is Tibet’s spiritual heart. Even before sightseeing begins, the prayer flags, high air and slow pace of the city begin preparing you for the road to Kailash.

Best available Lhasa hotel. Meals are on full-board basis — including lunch and dinner in Lhasa on this journey.

At 3,650m, Lhasa can affect sleep, appetite and energy. Move slowly from the first hour.

Altitude approx. 3,650m
Stay Best available Lhasa hotel

Note Arrival and acclimatization
Day 2 Potala Palace, Jokhang and Barkhor in Lhasa

This day shows the living heart of Tibetan pilgrimage before the road turns west.

You visit Potala Palace, the former winter residence of the Dalai Lama and one of the world’s highest palace complexes. You continue to Jokhang Temple, Tibet’s most sacred Buddhist temple, then explore Barkhor Street, the traditional pilgrimage circuit filled with prayer wheels, markets and Tibetan handicrafts.

Jokhang and Barkhor are especially important for understanding how Tibet walks in prayer. Watch the pilgrims. Some turn prayer wheels. Some prostrate. Some walk slowly in the kora rhythm. This prepares you to understand the Mount Kailash Kora later.

Return to the Lhasa hotel. Meals are on full-board basis. Monument access and camera rules should follow guide instructions.

Palace steps and city walking can feel harder at altitude. Move slowly.

Altitude approx. 3,650m
Stay Best available Lhasa hotel
Meals Full board
Note Potala, Jokhang and Barkhor
Day 3 Drepung and Sera Monasteries

This day adds learning and discipline to the pilgrimage. Monasteries show that devotion is not only emotion; it is practice.

You visit Drepung Monastery, once the largest monastery in Tibet, followed by Sera Monastery, known for traditional monk debate sessions. After sightseeing, you prepare luggage for the overland journey toward Mount Kailash and Nepal.

Drepung and Sera show Tibet’s monastic depth. The debates at Sera are not performance in the usual sense; they come from a long tradition of study and disciplined questioning. Later, Dolma La will ask its own question of the body.

Overnight in Lhasa. Meals are on full-board basis. Prepare luggage carefully for the plateau road.

This is another acclimatization day. Keep the pace gentle and avoid overexertion.

Altitude approx. 3,650m
Stay Best available Lhasa hotel

Note Drepung and Sera
Chapter 2 — Sacred Lakes, Monasteries and the Western Plateau
Day 4 Lhasa to Shigatse via Yamdrok Lake and Gyantse

The journey leaves Lhasa and begins crossing Tibet’s sacred landscape. City prayer becomes road pilgrimage.

You drive through Himalayan landscapes to Yamdrok Lake, one of Tibet’s sacred lakes. The route continues past Karola Glacier before visiting Gyantse’s Palcho Monastery and Kumbum Stupa. By evening, you arrive in Shigatse.

Yamdrok Lake prepares the pilgrim for Mansarovar. Karola Glacier and Gyantse add highland beauty and Tibetan Buddhist architecture to the route. These places show that Tibet’s sacred geography is not limited to Kailash alone.

Hotel stay in Shigatse. Meals are on full-board basis. Confirm whether lunch and dinner are included because the exclusions mention meals in Shigatse unless specified.

High roads and sightseeing can be tiring. Keep warm layers and water accessible.

Altitude approx. 3,800m
Stay Best available Shigatse hotel
Meals Full board
Note Yamdrok, Gyantse and Shigatse
Day 5 Tashilhunpo Monastery and Drive to Saga

This day moves the yatra toward western Tibet. The route becomes wider, quieter and more remote.

You visit Tashilhunpo Monastery, the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama. After permit checks, you continue west across the Tibetan Plateau through grasslands, nomadic settlements and high mountain passes toward Saga.

Tashilhunpo adds one more great monastery before the road becomes remote. The permit checks remind pilgrims that western Tibet and Kailash travel are controlled routes. Good paperwork is part of good pilgrimage.

Overnight in Saga. Meals are on full-board basis. Check meal inclusions carefully because the exclusions mention lunches and dinners in Saga unless specifically included.

Saga sits higher than Shigatse. Watch for headache, tiredness, poor sleep or low appetite.

Altitude approx. 4,450m
Stay Best available Saga hotel
Meals Full board
Note Monastery and plateau drive
Day 6 Drive from Saga to Lake Mansarovar

This is the day the route reaches sacred water. After Lhasa, monasteries and plateau roads, Mansarovar becomes the first great spiritual arrival near Kailash.

You drive across the remote Tibetan Plateau, following sections of the Yarlung Tsangpo River. Along the way, you may receive the first views of Mount Kailash, weather permitting. You arrive at Lake Mansarovar near Chiu Monastery.

Lake Mansarovar is revered across Hindu, Buddhist, Jain and Bon traditions. Chiu Monastery adds a Tibetan sacred presence to the lake setting. For many pilgrims, this day carries deep emotion because the mountain and lake finally enter the journey together.

Accommodation near Mansarovar is basic compared with Lhasa and Shigatse. Meals are on full-board basis.

The lake is high and exposed. Keep warm, move slowly and avoid unnecessary exertion.

Altitude approx. 4,590m
Stay Best available lakeside stay
Meals Full board
Note Mansarovar arrival
Day 7 Mansarovar Morning and Drive to Darchen

This day moves from sacred water to kora readiness. Mansarovar softens the heart; Darchen asks if the body is ready.

You enjoy the peaceful surroundings of Lake Mansarovar before driving to Darchen, the starting point of the Mount Kailash Kora. In Darchen, you complete preparations, meet the trekking team and receive a trek briefing.

The time at Mansarovar may include prayer or quiet reflection according to the final program. Darchen is where gear, support, group luggage, porter/yak arrangements and health readiness must be checked carefully.

Overnight in Darchen. Meals are on full-board basis.

If you feel unwell, speak before starting the kora. Darchen is the right place for honest decisions.

Altitude approx. 4,570m

Chapter 3 — Mount Kailash Kora
Day 8 The Kora Begins: Darchen to Dirapuk

The kora begins. After temples, monasteries, lakes and roads, the prayer now becomes walking.

You begin the sacred trek from Tarboche through the Lha-chu Valley. The itinerary notes approximately 13km of walking, with views of Mount Kailash’s western and northern faces. The day ends at Dirapuk Monastery guesthouse.

Tarboche marks the beginning area of the kora. The Lha-chu Valley leads the pilgrim into a landscape remembered through Tibetan pilgrimage traditions. Dirapuk is especially powerful because the mountain can feel very close.

Dirapuk guesthouse is basic. Meals are on full-board basis. Keep warm layers and personal items accessible.

Do not spend all your energy on Day 1. Dolma La comes tomorrow.

Altitude approx. 4,900m
Stay Best available Dirapuk lodge
Meals Full board
Note Approx. 13km kora walk
Day 9 Kora Day 2: Dolma La Pass to Zuthulphuk

This is the hardest and most sacredly charged day of the pilgrimage. Dolma La is the high threshold.

You cross Dolma-la Pass at approximately 5,630m, the highest point of the pilgrimage. After the pass, the route descends past Gauri Kund before continuing to Zuthulphuk Monastery.

Dolma La is associated in Tibetan Buddhist route memory with Tara. Gauri Kund carries deep reverence for Hindu pilgrims. Zuthulphuk is linked with sacred stories of Milarepa. This day holds great meaning, but it is also physically serious.

Zuthulphuk accommodation is basic. Meals are on full-board basis. Warmth, simple food and rest matter after the crossing.

Report worsening symptoms immediately. Health and descent decisions come before completion pressure.

Altitude Dolma La approx. 5,630m
Stay Best available Zuthulphuk lodge
Meals Full board
Note Hardest kora day
Day 10 Kora Day 3: Completing the Circuit to Darchen

The sacred circuit comes to completion. The final valley may feel peaceful, but every step still belongs to the prayer.

You complete the final section of the kora through a peaceful valley and return to Darchen. The group celebrates the successful completion of the Mount Kailash pilgrimage.

Completion is not conquest. Kailash is not climbed or won. The circuit is completed with gratitude and tired humility.

Overnight at the best available Darchen hotel. Meals are on full-board basis.

The body may feel tired after three kora days. Rest, hydrate and move carefully.

Altitude approx. 4,570m
Stay Best available Darchen hotel
Meals Full board
Note Kora completion
Chapter 4 — Return through Kerung to Kathmandu
Day 11 Return Drive from Darchen to Saga

The return begins. After Kailash, the same plateau feels different.

After breakfast, you begin the return journey eastward through the Tibetan Plateau. The road passes mountains, valleys and open plains before reaching Saga.

The drive gives time to absorb the kora. Many pilgrims become quieter on the return.

Overnight in Saga. Meals are on full-board basis.

Fatigue after the kora can be strong. Rest whenever possible.

Altitude approx. 4,450m
Stay Best available Saga hotel
Meals Full board
Note Return from Darchen
Day 12 Return Drive from Saga to Kerung

The route descends from the high plateau toward the Nepal border. The body may begin to feel relief as altitude decreases.

You continue toward the Nepal border through Himalayan scenery, crossing high passes and gradually descending toward Kerung, a border town between Tibet and Nepal.

Kerung is a transition point. It marks the shift from the Tibetan plateau toward the valleys leading into Nepal.

Overnight in Kerung. Meals are on full-board basis.

Even while descending, travel fatigue can remain. Keep documents ready for the next day’s border formalities.

Altitude approx. 2,700m
Stay Best available Kerung hotel
Meals Full board
Note Descent toward the Nepal border
Day 13 Border Crossing from Kerung to Kathmandu

The journey crosses from Tibet into Nepal. The landscape changes, the air thickens and the pilgrimage begins returning to ordinary life.

After border formalities at Kerung/Rasuwagadhi, you cross into Nepal and drive through Himalayan landscapes along the Trishuli River valley toward Kathmandu. On arrival, you transfer to the hotel.

Border timing depends on current procedures, documents, queues and local instructions. The drive to Kathmandu can be affected by traffic and road conditions.

Hotel in Kathmandu. Meals are on full-board basis.

The descent may feel welcome after Tibet, but this is still a long travel day.

Altitude approx. 1,400m
Stay Kathmandu hotel
Meals Full board
Note Kerung border crossing and arrival in Kathmandu
Day 14 Leisure Day in Kathmandu

This day gives the body and mind a soft landing after the high plateau and kora.

You have a free day to explore Kathmandu Valley or rest. Optional visits may include Boudhanath Stupa, Pashupatinath Temple, Kathmandu Durbar Square or Swayambhunath Temple.

Returning to Kathmandu after Kailash can feel meaningful. Some pilgrims choose Pashupatinath for final prayers. Others prefer quiet rest. Both are valid.

Hotel in Kathmandu. Meals are on full-board basis.

Do not underestimate recovery. The body has crossed high altitude, long roads and the kora.

Altitude approx. 1,400m
Stay Kathmandu hotel
Meals Full board
Note Recovery and optional Kathmandu sightseeing
Day 15 Final Departure from Kathmandu

The formal journey ends, but the route has left many layers: Lhasa, monasteries, Mansarovar, Kailash, Dolma La, Kerung and Kathmandu.

After breakfast, transfer to Tribhuvan International Airport according to your flight schedule.

This overland journey is powerful because it begins in Tibet’s sacred culture and ends in Nepal after the full kora. The pilgrim carries not only images, but lessons: patience in Lhasa, distance on the plateau, stillness at Mansarovar, humility at Dolma La and gratitude on return.

Breakfast and meals follow the final program. Keep passport, tickets and luggage ready.

Altitude approx. 1,400m
Stay Departure day
Meals Breakfast (as per flight)

Package FAQs

Before you choose the Lhasa overland journey

Clear answers on the full kora, full-board meals, permits and visa inclusions, the Kerung exit and the Kathmandu finish on this 15-day journey.

Does this itinerary include the full Mount Kailash Kora?

Yes. The itinerary includes the full three-day Mount Kailash Kora from Darchen/Tarboche to Dirapuk, across Dolma La to Zuthulphuk, and back to Darchen.

Does this trip start in Lhasa and end in Kathmandu?

Yes. The route starts with arrival in Lhasa and ends in Kathmandu after crossing the Kerung/Rasuwagadhi border from Tibet into Nepal.

Is this route better for acclimatization?

It gives several days in Tibet before the kora, including Lhasa, Shigatse and Saga. This can help pacing, but it does not remove altitude risk. Dolma La remains challenging.

Are all meals included?

Yes. This journey runs on full-board basis — breakfast, lunch and dinner throughout the tour, including Lhasa, Shigatse and Saga. Only personal beverages beyond the provided drinking water are extra.

Are yak and porter services included during the kora?

Yak or porter arrangements for group luggage may be included if the selected package includes them. Personal yak, horse or porter hire for individual use is excluded.

What permits are needed?

Tibet Travel Permit, Alien’s Travel Permit and Mount Kailash entry permits are all included — and so are the Chinese Visa and Tibet Visa processing fees. We handle the process; submit your passport details early.

What kind of accommodation should I expect?

The route uses the best available hotels, guesthouses and lodges on a twin-sharing basis, with oxygen supply in the bedrooms at high-altitude stops. Lhasa and Shigatse are more comfortable; Mansarovar and kora lodges are still simple.

Can the Kerung to Kathmandu crossing change?

Yes. Border procedures, road conditions, landslides, weather and local instructions can affect the Kerung/Rasuwagadhi crossing and the drive to Kathmandu. Note: the corridor was damaged by the flash flood of 26 August 2026 and is closed for the 2026 season while repairs continue. Our 2027 departures are planned in good faith that the crossing reopens, and we verify status for every departure.

Is the Kerung border open for the 2027 season?

The Rasuwagadhi–Kerung crossing was closed after the flash flood of 26 August 2026, which damaged the border bridge, the Timure customs area and sections of the road. Repair work is under way, and no reopening date is confirmed yet. Our 2027 overland departures are planned in good faith that the corridor reopens for the next season. We verify border status for every departure and will speak with you early and honestly if a route change or alternative is needed.
